HELP IS BETTER THAN BOMBS FACTS : 1. In 1920, the FRENCH and the ENGLISH divided Arabia and Mesopotamia (and part of the Ottoman Empire ) amongst themselves. They created “nations” without any consideration for the diversity of the local populations that had been previously grouped in often competitive and combative tribes. AS A RESULT, THE PRESENT SITUATION IN IRAQ IS A TIME BOMB. Iraq : a group of urban ARAB Sunni Muslins rules a country of rural ARAB Shia Muslims and an important KURD (non-Arab) minority who inhabit mountains from where is extracted more than 40% of the country’s oil. Iran : Mostly PERSIAN (non-Arab) Shia Muslims with a small KURD minority (many of them Sunni Muslims), who also sit on a lot of oil. Saudi Arabia , Kuwait and Emirates : mostly ARAB Sunni Muslims from Bedouin descent (Walhhabis ) 2. The U.S.A. is partly responsible for Saddam Hussein’s present power because of its earlier support of Iraq during its war against Iran. It is as well partly responsible for Al Qaeda’s existence and military sophistication, for it supported Osama bin Laden against the Russians in Afghanistan. 3. Although Saddam Hussein is a cruel dictator he is admired by many Muslims because he has until now resisted the U.S which is perceived as the source of all their misery . He is a danger for the international community, and he must be DISARMED. 4. Without the American deployment of massive military force, Saddam Hussein would not have accepted the present use of U.N. inspectors. (He had barred them from most sites since 1998. ) Those are the facts. But going to WAR AND KILLING MAYBE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT IRAQIS just to “get rid of a bad guy” is NEITHER A ACCEPTABLE NOR AN INEVITABLE CHOICE! HOW CAN WE HOPE TO FIGHT TERRORISM BY TERRORIZING MILLIONS OF INNOCENT IRAQIS ???? 1. Saddam Hussein will be VERY DIFFICULT TO KILL without Iraqi help. Just one example: he has from four to seven identical look-alikes. And the USA hasn’t even caught Osama bin Laden yet!! 2.The economic sanctions against Iraq have not destabilized Saddam Hussein . THEY ARE DESTROYING THE ECONOMY and driving the Iraqis, who do not understand them, to destitution and desperation . 4. MUSLIMS represent A FIFTH OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION, . We may find ourselves at odds with the politics of some predominantly Muslim nations, but we must remember that they are SOVEREIGN COUNTRIES. We have no right, under the UN charter and under international law, to involve ourselves in their internal affairs UNLESS THEY ATTACK US! 5. We must remember that Al Qaeda, which did attack us on 9/11 and on other occasions is NOT a sovereign nation, but a loose group of terrorist cells that threatens many nations, not just the USA. Osama Bin Laden is said to have tried organizing a Muslim rebellion in China’s Xin Jiang province in the 1980’s. Also at risk are large tourist destinations such as Bali and Egypt. But, there are other ways than WAR to address these issues : COUNTER-ARGUMENTS TO WAR : The USA is the country most at risk, and therefore should—and will--carry most of the financial burden to fight terrorism, but there could be a PEACEFUL SOLUTION if all of us—Americans and others—act concertedly. It is likely that Saddam Hussein has Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), and that he is smartly using the world’s reluctance to go to war to gain time . We believe that it is IMPOSSIBLE for Saddam Hussein to develop more WMDs, or to sell them to terrorists, because he is now watched closely by American U2 spy planes and other intelligence-gathering means, by the U.N. inspectors and surrounded by the U.S. military. (Leaving the troops there is costly [a billion dollars per week] , but they are NEEDED to force Saddam Hussein to comply with the inspections.) It is likely that it will take some time for the U.N. inspectors to outsmart Saddam Hussein. If there is a war with hundreds of thousands Iraqi civilian casualties ,the whole region might be destabilized and/or the whole Muslim world set on fire Still, there are other SOLUTIONS besides a pre-emptive attack 1. THE SANCTIONS SHOULD BE LIFTED. Massive international aid for the Iraqi people, including some proven successes as “micro-credit” initiatives, should be offered and SUPERVISED BY THE U.N., which Saddam Hussein now pretends to respect so much. This would prove to the Muslim world that we indeed care more for the Iraqi people than we do for the removal of a dictator. 2. THE WORLD’S WEALTHIER COUNTRIES SHOULD HELP THE USA TO PAY FOR ITS MILITARY PRESENCE UNTIL NEXT WINTER. This would serve to convince Saddam that we are ready to go to war should he try to prevent his people from receiving this aid, or to export WMDs. By next winter, the U.N. inspectors will have found the weapons or made certain that they have been destroyed. Also, by then, there is a chance the Iraqi people might be strong enough to have rid themselves of Saddam Hussein ( with our “unofficial” help). And, most optimistically, showing that we care about the Iraqi people might even help disentangle the situation in Israel and Palestine . TO THESE ENDS, This grass root movement seeks to unite, empower and give voice to ORDINARY PEOPLE , to fight terrorism, to help prevent the rise of other Saddam Husseins or other Osama Bin Ladens, and be a blueprint for other threatening situations affecting OUR COMMON HOME : THE PLANET EARTH ALL OVER THE WORLD ORDINARY PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE TOGETHER WE CAN INSIST THAT WE DO SADDAM HUSSEIN MUST BE DISARMED, BUT, AFTER 5000 YEARS OF CIVILIZATION, IT IS TIME TO STOP BEAUREAUCRATS AND ISOLATED LEGISLATURES FROM SENDING US TO WAR AGAINST EACH OTHER.
